The opening episodes of the long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi series are packed with little nods, references and Easter eggs to a multitude of Star Wars content.
One of the most notable areas in which the show draws from past movies and TV shows is a slew of returning characters from Bail Organa and a young Princess Leia to the arrival of the Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother.
The series also sees a character return from the very first Star Wars film, A New Hope, as Owen Lars takes centre-stage in the opening episode.
But just what is Owen’s significance to the Star Wars universe and how is he related to Luke and Anakin Skywalker?
Owen Lars returns in Obi-Wan Kenobi
Episode 1 of the new Disney+ series continues the story of the titular Jedi ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith.
We find him stationed on Tatooine where he can keep an eye on young Luke Skywalker and he has several icy interactions with Owen Lars, who is caring for Luke alongside his wife, Beru.
Owen Lars runs a moisture farm in the Jundland Wastes on Tatooine after inheriting the land from his father, Cliegg Lars.
The character, played in Obi-Wan Kenobi by Joel Edgerton, is very protective of Luke, wanting him to focus his life on the farm rather than dreaming about jetting off to see the galaxy and hoping to avoid drawing attention from the Imperials in the process.
After the rise of the Empire and having previously witnessed the beginning of Anakin’s downfall, Owen remains highly dubious of Jedi and is angry when Obi-Wan tries to bring Luke a toy spaceship, later reminding him of what happened when Kenobi tried to train Luke’s father in a scolding remark.
How is Owen Lars related to Luke and Anakin?
While many fans may know Owen Lars as Uncle Owen, the character is technically Luke Skywalker’s step-uncle.
This is because Owen Lars is not related to Luke by blood as he is only the step-brother of Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker.
In Attack of the Clones, we learn Anakin’s mother Shmi Skywalker married Owen’s father Cliegg Lars but this was after Owen had been born.
Instead, Owen is the product of Cliegg’s first marriage to a woman named Aika, who died prior to his marriage to Shmi.
Despite not being related to Luke by blood, Owen and his wife Beru still agreed to take on the young boy when Obi-Wan brought the child to them at the end of Revenge of the Sith, although it’s clear in the Kenobi series that Owen did so begrudgingly.
Fans discuss Owen’s return in Obi-Wan Kenobi
After such a prominent appearance in the opening episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Owen Lars has become the topic of lots of discussion among Star Wars fans.
One fan on Twitter wrote: “I will never mentally recover from Obi-Wan trying to give Luke a toy and Owen throwing it back at him.”
While another added: “When Owen broke the toy Obi-Wan bought for Luke, it really made me realise Owen had no intention of letting Luke be a child.”
However, this fan countered: “The fact Owen still protected Obi-Wan’s life from the Inquisitors while trying to play it off as just protecting Luke’s says so much about him. Owen Lars is a good man!”
This fan, meanwhile, noted how Owen and Beru have it easy looking after Luke: “Owen and Beru really got the easy twin, that boy runs off to sit on the roof and play pod-racing. Bail and Breha have a gremlin child.”
And finally, this fan commented: “Yeah Obi-Wan would’ve definitely been a better uncle to Luke and Leia than Owen.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is available to stream now after releasing on Disney+ on Friday, May 27th, 2022.
