Hundreds of concert-goers along with many other motorists found their journeys home severely delayed late on Wednesday night owing to a “police incident”. There were reports that it possibly involved a person “on the wrong side of the barrier on the bridge over the motorway”.
Traffic was stopped on the M602 eastbound between Junctions 1 and 2 for Trafford Park and westbound between Junctions 2 and 3 for Salford, west of the city just before midnight. Emergency services were said to be at the scene. National Highways for the North West said that delays were beginning to build up on the approach to the site of the incident. Live traffic information suggested there was slow and stationary traffic on the M602 for around four miles between the outer ring road near Eccles to Salford.
The incident affected many rock fans who were heading home that way after leaving the Etihad Stadium following a concert headlined by Liam Gallagher.
One witness to the tailbacks posted on Twitter: “M602 closed at J2 Gilda Brook Road due to police incident where what appears to be someone on the wrong side of the barrier on the bridge over the motorway. Up and over diversion in place towards J1.” The MancTraffic account on Twitter stated: “M602 within j2 CLOSED both ways. Queues e/b to j1 and w/b through j3 onto Regent Rd with traffic from the Etihad gig affected. Use the M60 j11 onto the A57 Liverpool Rd, Bentcliff Way & Eccles New Rd.”
And North West Motorway Police said: “Due to a police incident we have closed both carriageways either side of j2 of the M602 (Gilda Brook Road).”
The Inrix live traffic and travel database posted: “M602 Greater Manchester, both directions closed, queueing traffic due to police incident at J2 A576 Gilda Brook Road (Trafford Park / Eccles). Diversion via the slip roads.”
