Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has done a deep-dive into the deal that saw Darwin Nunez arrive at Liverpool this summer.

The Reds forked out a club-record fee for the Uruguayan last month, and now, weeks after the deal was closed, Romano has shared the story behind the story.

According to the Italian, Liverpool have been courting Nunez for some time, and the journalist says that the striker actually impressed Jurgen Klopp when Benfica met Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals last season, stating that the Liverpool boss was very surprised by the impact Nunez had during these games.

What’s been said?

Romano spoke about how Nunez impressed Klopp.

“This Darwin Nunez story started a long time ago. It’s true that Darwin had a fantastic impact against Liverpool in the Champions League games and Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of checking players in the real games in the face-to-face games, with his own Liverpool and he was really surprised by the impact of this fantastic striker,” Romano said.

Career-defining

When all is said and done in Nunez’s career, we may well look back on those two performances against Liverpool last season as career-defining games.

Indeed, it seems as though his two showings against the Reds in the Champions League ultimately helped him get his move to Anfield, and now, the world is his oyster as he prepares to become a key player for one of the biggest clubs in the world

Who knows where he would have gone if he didn’t show up during those two games – teams as varied as Manchester United and West Ham had been keen on him, but now, he has the chance to forge his legacy on Merseyside.
